Take Action on AB 2084

You can take action on this alert by reading the information below and following the directions at the bottom.

Issue

Please Urge Governor Schwarzenegger to Continue the Fight Against Childhood Obesity!

Background

Please help us urge the Governor to sign AB 2084 (Brownley), which would establish nutrition standards for the beverages served in child care settings.

With a third of all children between the ages of two and five consuming at least one sugar-sweetened beverage a day and the strong relationship between sugar-sweetened beverage consumption and obesity, it is, unfortunately, not surprising that 25% of all children entering Kindergarten in California are overweight or obese.

Given the increasingly important role child care plays for millions of working families in California and the significant amount of time children spend in child care, the beverage standards in AB 2084 (Brownley) are more important than ever. These standards, which are consistent with the recommendations of the American Academy of Pediatrics, will help children establish healthy taste preferences and habits at an early age and prevent many adverse health consequences later in life.

RE: Request for Signature on AB 2084 (Brownley)

Dear Governor,

I am writing to respectfully request your signature on AB 2084 (Brownley), which would ensure that healthy beverages are served in child care.

Given the increasingly important role child care plays for millions of working families in California, we must ensure that these children enjoy healthy nutrition environments while in care. AB 2084 (Brownley) helps to do this by establishing guidelines for the beverages served in child care that are consistent with the recommendations of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

You have been an effective champion in the fight against childhood obesity by sponsoring and signing legislation establishing higher nutrition standards for the food and beverages sold in schools. Those standards have made a difference in the fight against childhood obesity. A study released this month in the journal Pediatrics reports that after implementation of those higher nutrition standards, obesity levels among California students in grades 5, 7, and 9 began to level off and even decrease slightly.

Yet too many young children enter school already at an unhealthy weight (nearly 25 percent of children ages two to five are overweight or obese). To help prevent this, AB 2084 (Brownley) would extend to child care settings standards similar to the effective beverage nutrition policies in our schools.

For these reasons, I ask for your signature on AB 2084 (Brownley).

Sincerely,

Your name and address here
