Ask Governor Schwarzenegger to Support California Trans Fat Ban

Background

Trans fat in restaurant food is a leading contributor to cardiovascular disease. AB 97, a bill that would require restaurants and bakeries to phase out trans fat from their food, has been passed by the California legislature and is now on the Governors desk. The Governor has not expressed a position on the bill.

Support AB 97

Dear Governor,

Sign AB 97 (Mendoza)

I support AB 97 (Mendoza), a bill that would phase out trans fat from California restaurants and bakeries.
Every day, many health-conscious Californians unwittingly ingest large amounts of these deadly fats at restaurants and other food facilities.
AB 97 will go a long way toward promoting the health of Californians. Regulations similar to the language proposed in the bill have been adopted across the country. In addition, several major restaurant chains have eliminated or greatly reduced the trans fats they serve, proving that eliminating trans fats in restaurants is an achievable goal.
Trans fats are known to carry significant negative health consequences, that include increasing levels of the bad LDL cholesterol and decreasing levels of HDL, the good cholesterol. Furthermore, researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health estimate that trans fats have caused 72,000 to 228,000 heart attacks, including roughly 50,000 fatal heart attacks per.
AB 97 is an important public health bill and I hope you will sign it into law.

Thank you,
